The Ministry of Energy and Energy Industries (MEEI) is an arm of the Government of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago (GORTT) responsible for the overall management of the oil, gas and minerals sectors in Trinidad and Tobago. This includes the monitoring, controlling and regulating of the country’s energy and mineral sectors, which are the largest single contributors to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of the country.

Trinidad and Tobago is one of the oldest hydrocarbon producers in the world with over one hundred years undertaking considerable oil and gas exploration activity, but has been mainly producing natural gas since the 1990s. The country is also a major petrochemical hub fulfilling local and global needs through the production and exportation of Ammonia, Methanol, Urea, Urea-Ammonium Nitrate (UAN) and Melamine. The island nation also has a mining sector which produces commodities used in the construction industry, such as sand, gravel and clay. Cognizant of an evolving global energy sector, Trinidad and Tobago continues to advance efforts to include alternative sources of energy such as renewables as well as the adoption of technologies in navigating the sector’s complex future. The MEEI focus is on creating partnerships and innovations that foster self-reliance and a resilient and sustainable energy sector through an ethical, efficient and evolving regulatory framework.
