Karel Eckhorst
Former Advisor to Executive Director,
International Monetary Fund (IMF)
Experienced Central Bank Director of Research with a demonstrated history of working in the banking industry. He has led and advised many governments’ interdepartmental workgroups and commissions and was in 2021 Suriname’s chief negotiator with the IMF for the 2021 Extended Fund Facility (EFF). He was also a member of the negotiating teams of Suriname in restructuring debt with all categories of creditors. Skilled in Sustainable Development, Analytical Skills, Coaching, Lecturing, and International Relations. Strong research professional with a Master of Science (MSc) in Macroeconomics from the Anton de Kom University of Suriname and a Master of Arts (MA) focused on Economics of Development from Erasmus International Institute for Social Studies (ISS), The Hague.
Currently, he is an independent consultant with Kareck Economic Advisory Services N.V. (KEAS) in charge of technical assistance on public financial management (PFM) transformations, economic diversification, budget planning, managing resource wealth, setup of a Sovereign Wealth Fund (SWF) for Suriname and supporting the oil, gas and environment ministry’s policy preparation. He is also a student thesis advisor at the University of Guyana.
In 2007 he was an Economist (P-3) at the United Nations Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (UN-ECLAC) Sub-regional Headquarters in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago.
